Optical microscopy for advanced brain imaging.
Bo Li received his Ph.D. degree from Beijing Jiaotong University in 2015. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher with Prof. Chris Xu at Cornell University until 2020. In 2020, he joined ITBR at Fudan University as a principal investigator. Bo's contributions to ultrafast laser and multi-photon microscopy earned him the 2020 Bernard J. Couillaud Prize, awarded by OSA and Coherent Inc. He has published 25 peer-reviewed journal articles, including in Nature Methods, and has delivered over 10 plenary/postdeadline/invited talks and 3 online courses. Bo serves as a guest editor for the journals Frontiers in Neuroscience and Photonics.
Cihang Kong, Associate investigator. She received her Ph.D. degree from HongKong University in 2019. She then worked as a postdoc at Bielefeld University until 2022. In 2022, She joined ITBR at Fudan University as a Associate investigator. For her contribution to femtosecond laser, multi-photon microscopy and Coherent Raman Scattering Microscopy. She has published 19 peer-reviewed journal articles, including Light: Science & Applications.
Yuxuan Ren, Associate investigator. He received his Ph.D. degree from University of Science and Technology of China in 2012. He once worked at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and San Francisco State University, and then worked as a postdoc with Profs. Kevin Tsia and Kenneth Wong at HongKong University until 2020. In 2020, he joined ITBR at Fudan University as a Associate investigator. He has published 23 peer-reviewed journal articles, including Light: Science & Applications. In 2020, "coded light sheet improved phosphor imaging" was rated as one of the world's 20 top photonic technologies by "Laser Focus World".
Min joined the lab in 2023. She received her Ph.D. degree from Harbin Engineering University in 2023. Her current research interest is two-photon voltage imaging.
Shasha joined the lab in 2021 after receiving her Ph.D. degree from Drexel University (US) in 2021. During her Ph.D., she studied the role of interneurons in regulating the connection between the mPFC and dorsomedial thalamus. Her current research interest is in studying the function of the mPFC in the pathological progression of schizophrenia.
Yujie joined the lab in 2021, having received her Ph.D. degree from Beijing Normal University in 2021. Her doctoral research focused on the axonal modulation mechanism of dopaminergic neurons in the midbrain using slice electrophysiology, pharmacology, and optogenetics. Currently, she is interested in understanding the mechanisms of deep brain stimulation and the degeneration of dopaminergic axons in Parkinson's disease.
Yaoguang joined the lab in 2021 after obtaining his B.S. from Northwest A&F University in 2021. His current research interest is in developing a comprehensive optical imaging and optogenetic system to explore the circuit function of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex in spatial episodic memory.
Chengyu joined the lab in 2022, having obtained his B.S. from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2022. He is currently interested in developing tools to connect optical image research at the mesoscopic scale to gene research at the microscopic scale, as well as optical imaging of three-dimensional neural cell information for epilepsy research.
Jixiong joined the lab in 2022, having obtained his B.S. from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2022. His current research interest is in developing an ROI imaging add-on module for three-photon microscopy to improve imaging depth and observe neurons in deeper brain tissue.
Shoupei joined the lab in 2023, having obtained his M.S. and B.S. in Optical Engineering from Shandong University in 2023 and 2020, respectively. His current research interest is in developing a high-speed two-photon microscope for in vivo imaging of neuronal voltage signals, as well as utilizing deep learning to improve multiphoton imaging.
Jiahao joined the lab in 2023. He obtained his B.S. from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2023. His current research interest is in developing a ultra-large field-of-view two-photon microscopy to imaging as many cells as possible.
Yan Feng joined the laboratory in 2024. Before that, he obtained a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Jilin University. His interest is to explore the field of brain science, and he hopes to discover more mysteries of the brain and answer more scientific questions about the primary and advanced functions of the brain through advanced large-field two-photon imaging and deep three-photon imaging technology.
Jing Ya joined the lab in 2024. Before that, she obtained her B.S. from Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. She is currently intrigued by using multiphoton imaging to delve into the field of neurobiology.
Jingchuan is a Ph.D. student at Huashan Hospital. Before starting his Ph.D. program, he worked as a doctor at Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College of HUST. He is currently working on finding better solutions to treat neurosurgical diseases.
Xinyang joined our lab in 2023, majoring in neurosurgery of Huashan Hospital. His research program focuses on the modulation mechanism of diverse neurons in the cortex and thalamus using electrophysiology, pharmacology, and optogenetics to offer new ideas and therapies for clinical challenges.

Peng joined our lab in 2021 after getting his bachelor's degree from Ocean University of China, and he earned his master's degree in 2024. He's friendly, popular with everyone, and a trusted, hardworking teammate. He’s learned a lot about microscopy and is now working at Thorlabs.
Xuejiao joined the lab as a research assistant in July 2021 after obtaining her M.S. from Wenzhou Medical University in 2021. During her time in the lab, she demonstrated a hardworking and responsible attitude. She left the lab in July 2022 and now works at the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) Qingdao branch.
The first student I supervised successfully completed his studies and was offered the ideal job. In order to see him off, all of us gathered together to express our wishes and expectations for him. This moment marks not only an important milestone in personal growth, but also recognition of our team cohesion and shared achievements. We wish him with confidence even greater success in his new post.
This is Peng Deng, the first Master's graduate from our lab. Peng is an incredibly hardworking and dedicated individual whose efforts and perseverance have earned everyone's respect. He is also a genuinely kind and likable friend, maintaining excellent relationships with every member of the lab. It was always heartwarming to see how much everyone appreciated and cared for him—a testament to the goodwill he cultivated through his sincerity and actions. After graduation, he joined Thorlabs, and we are confident that he will continue to progress steadily in his career. We wish him great success in his work and happiness in life!

My postdoctoral supervisor visited the lab and listened to the students' work report. In the group photo, the expressions of each of us are full of pride and joy, which is not only the respect and welcome to the tutor's visit, but also the best display of our team's solidarity and friendly atmosphere.
Our group went to a villa in the suburbs together on the eve of the Mid-Autumn Festival and enjoyed an unforgettable outing and holiday. Everyone's faces were filled with smiles, showing the solidarity and friendship between the team and a good moment to relax after the stressful work. This group photo not only records the friendship of the members on the road of academic exploration, but also reflects their mutual support and enjoyment of life in daily life.
Our research group finally took a group photo together under the emblem of our school, with everyone beaming with happiness. This photo not only serves as a testament to our work, but also a reflection of the strong bonds of friendship among us. Working in this united and friendly team brings us immeasurable happiness and fulfillment.
Happy new year! We went to a highly recommended self-service hotpot restaurant by the students of our school, and it was definitely worth it! We were all impressed by the delicious food at this restaurant. The ingredients were fresh and the taste was fantastic. After trying different flavors of hotpot, we all felt very full and satisfied.
The students went to try the food at this restaurant and it looked really appetizing. The dishes served at this restaurant were definitely tempting, and the students all expressed that it was a wonderful experience.
Today is Teachers' Day and the students gave flowers and gifts to several teachers to express their gratitude. To thank the students for their efforts, we went out together to enjoy some delicious food. This is a day full of gratitude and joy, and we believe that with everyone's hard work and dedication, the future will be even brighter.
Today, I happened to run into Shu's research group taking photos, and I was honored to join them. Working and learning with this team is a special experience, and I am grateful for their invitation and support.
Today, I played badminton with the students for the first time, and it was a lot of fun! We swung our rackets and hit the shuttlecock with all our might, enjoying the pleasure of sports together with laughter.
During the pandemic, everyone has faced difficulties, and we have had to hold group meetings online. Although we cannot meet in person, we are still able to communicate research progress, comfort and help each other through online meetings. In this special period, we have felt the strength and cohesion of the team even more. We face challenges together, support each other, and overcome difficulties together.
Another year has passed, and we happily gathered together for a meal. We ordered all the dishes from the restaurant, but still felt a little hungry, haha. Although the food couldn't fill our stomachs, this gathering filled our hearts. We enjoyed the delicious food together, shared our stories and experiences, and this was a very rare opportunity. We all felt very happy and satisfied.
Our laboratory has just started construction and although it's not fully developed, there are already some initial prototypes. We picked a place that wasn't too empty to take a group photo to commemorate this special occasion. Hehe, although the construction process may be challenging, we are full of confidence and enthusiasm. We believe that the laboratory will become better and better in the future, and we hope that this group photo will become a wonderful memory of our construction process.
